Large clinic or single-surgeon clinic? What to check

Size alone does not tell you which is better. Large clinics often have several doctors, anesthesia staff and equipment, while at a single-surgeon clinic the same doctor often handles everything from consultation to surgery and aftercare. Start by checking who will operate and who will handle your aftercare.

01What size tells you

Clinic size is only a clue about the number of doctors, the equipment and how the clinic is run. It does not determine surgical results. Even within the same large clinic, doctors differ in experience and in the operations they mostly perform, and single-surgeon clinics differ from one another too.

So rather than asking "large or single-surgeon?", it is easier to compare clinics by asking "who performs this operation, and within what system?"

02What to check at a large clinic

  • Whether the doctor you consult with is the one who operates
  • Who handles anesthesia, and whether dedicated anesthesia staff are present
  • Whether the same doctor follows your recovery or someone else takes over
  • How consultations with the coordinator and with the doctor are divided

03What to check at a single-surgeon clinic

  • Who handles aftercare when the doctor is away
  • Whether there is a partner medical facility for emergencies
  • Whether the operations the doctor mostly performs match the one you want

04What to check either way

  • The doctor's specialist qualifications and the operations they mostly perform
  • Whether reviews of the same operation have built up on several sites over a long period
  • Whether reviews arrived all at once in a short period
  • Whether the clinic clearly explains what happens if a revision or side effect occurs
