When to have a revision rhinoplasty

Nose

A revision rhinoplasty is usually discussed 6 months to a year or more after the first surgery, once the tissue has settled. Urgent problems such as inflammation or an implant showing through are treated first, without waiting.

01Why wait

After surgery, the tissue inside the nose needs time for the swelling to go down and the scars to soften. Operating again during this period makes the tissue hard to assess accurately, and leftover swelling can lead to misjudging the shape.

For this reason, a revision is generally discussed 6 months to a year or more after the first surgery. The right timing depends on how the previous surgery was done and the current state of the tissue.

02When to get help right away

For urgent problems like these, do not wait. Contact the clinic that did the surgery, or a nearby medical facility, first.

  • Redness, warmth or pus that suggest inflammation
  • An implant showing through the skin or looking as if it might push out
  • A nose that has become visibly crooked after an injury

03What to bring to the consultation

  • The date, clinic and materials of the previous surgery (silicone, type of cartilage)
  • Photos from before and after surgery, and of your recovery so far
  • Specific concerns, such as height, tip direction, a visible implant or breathing

Materials are sometimes changed in a revision. The differences between them are covered in Silicone implants vs. your own cartilage.

05FAQ

It has been less than 6 months and I don't like the shape.

Some swelling may remain, so it may be too early to judge the final shape. Check your progress with the clinic that did the surgery first, and keep photos of the changes. They help at later consultations.

Is a revision harder than the first surgery?

Scar tissue and the state of the remaining cartilage often make the plan more complex. Records of the previous surgery make the consultation easier.

Can I have the revision at a different clinic?

Yes. If you bring the surgical record from the first clinic (date, materials, extent), the new clinic can assess your condition more easily.
